Follow up of EU policy developments with an impact on healthcare systems (NIHDI)

-

The OSE has been awarded a three-year project to provide the Belgian National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (NIHDI) with expertise and analysis on EU policies impacting national health care systems. This project builds on a longstanding collaboration between the OSE and the NIHDI in this field.

It includes the regular monitoring of EU policy developments in a broad range of areas, from public health to social and economic policy, internal market policy, EU funding instruments, and case law from the Court of Justice of the European Union. The results of this monitoring are summarised in two periodic publications:

  • A quarterly bulletin providing an overview of key strategies, initiatives, case laws and publications that have been recently published or planned.
  • A biannual briefing presenting key proposals advanced by the European Commission and priorities brought to the European agenda by the rotating Presidencies of the Council of the EU in more depth.

Ad hoc studies and support are also carried out with the aim to inform ongoing policies and reforms on specific topics. For the period 2025-2027, our work will focus on the following topics:

  • Access to health care for vulnerable groups, with a particular focus on developing the second edition of a white paper on this issue.
  • Strategies to improve population coverage, comparing best practices at European level.
  • The integration of European Reference Networks (ERNs) on rare diseases within the Belgian health system, focusing on best practices in this area.
  • European initiatives that support Member States in the field of mental health.
  • European initiatives to support national policies on the health workforce.
